$7 Billion Canadian Beauty Industry Fights Back on June 2
May 31, 2021 TORONTO — The Canadian Beauty Industry is pulling together to raise awareness about how their $7 Billion industry has been decimated by unilateral shutdowns across the country. Red Balloon Wednesdays is a joint initiative fueled by the frustration of industry professionals. The protest continues this Wed. June 2 at 12:00 EST and is gaining momentum with over 2,000 participants to date and a reach of over 200,000 on social media.

“We are so proud of our industry and that we have pulled together to show support for each other. Business owners have been forced to close, many of these businesses are owner-operated and they are losing their livelihood. If we don’t make changes, support safe opening across the country, and consider subsidies, many business owners will be forced into bankruptcy and/or to work underground. This is a $7 billion industry that is in jeopardy!” says Sandra Fiore, Chairperson of the Allied Beauty Association of Canada (ABACanada.com).

The Allied Beauty Association of Canada and other industry associations across the country including OPHA (Ontario Professional Hair Stylists Association, www.oph-association.com), Beauty Council (beautycouncil.ca) and several major suppliers have joined forces to raise awareness about the impact this is having on the industry as a whole. The initiative continues to gain momentum across the county.

“This 3rd lockdown is the biggest blow yet to our industry, it’s time for us to stand together and raise awareness about the impact this decision has had on over 35,000 salons across the country.” adds Tanya Hill Vice President of Ontario Professional Beauty Associations. “It’s time to fight back and raise awareness so people understand how this industry has been impacted.”

Industry professionals, clients, and supporters want to go back to work! They have joined together to stand the beauty industry with #Red Balloon Wednesdays. This is a safe protest that shows the solidarity of those that have been impacted by the lack of government support for the personal care sector.

Clients and industry will show their solidarity every Wednesday until we are heard! Five industry representatives plan to safely protest in Queens Park Wednesday, June 2 at 12:00 pm EST and invite everyone to join virtually by placing a balloon on your front step, place of business or tie it to a nearby tree or mailbox. Those in the beauty sector argue that they’ve been ready to open for months and have everything needed to follow public health safety protocols. Our government has failed this industry. It’s time to be heard!
